Surrounded by a ring of mighty walls, the historical centre of Polička still breathes the atmosphere of the Middle Ages as well as later architectural styles. The square is dominated by the Baroque town hall built by František Maxmilián Kaňka in 1739-1744. Inside you can see the original Gothic chapel and the exposition of the Municipal Gallery with valuable paintings of the Hohenems family. You should not miss the sumptuous Marian column with its rich sculptural decoration by Jiří František Pacák. Thanks to their uniqueness, both the town hall and the Marian column were inscribed on the list of national cultural monuments.
The richly carved classicistic gates, which adorn the entrances of houses lining the square and adjacent streets, rank among the original attractions of the local burgher architecture.
