Vysoké Mýto

The dowry town of Czech queens began to write its history in the 13th century, when it was founded by King Přemysl Otakar II. The regular layout of the town with its central square, which is the largest squared-shaped square in the Czech Republic, has been preserved until today. While walking through the centre, you cannot miss the Gothic St. Lawrence Church with its unique Art Nouveau fresco decoration, the Choceňská, Pražská and Litomyšlská Gates. The Vodárenská and Klášterská Bastions, parts of the former fortifications, have been preserved too.

The 20th century and the production of automobiles left an indelible mark on the face of the town. In the first half of the century, the Carrosserie Sodomka company, owned by the genius designer and coachbuilder Josef Sodomka, brought fame to Vysoké Mýto. The company made Czechoslovakia famous all over the world in the 1930s and 1940s with its cars. Every year you can commemorate this time during the Sodomka's Vysoké Mýto Festival or when visiting the Museum of Czech Car Bodywork, which offers a show of historic cars and interactive exhibitions for young visitors.

You can learn about the history of Vysoké Mýto at the nearby regional museum, where you can also see an exhibition of historic firefighting equipment from the local company Stratílek.

If you want to stretch your body after a walk through history, head to the Na Vinicích area. You can take advantage of singletrack trails, pumptrack, workout gyms and many other features.
