The Litomyšl Castle, the most significant architectural monument in the Bohemian-Moravian Borderlands and one of the most important Renaissance structures in the Czech Republic, has been the main feature of the city already since the second half of the 16th century. Unique sgraffito ornamentation and almost unchanged original form, which the castle has preserved until the present, was what led to it being entered onto the UNESCO world cultural heritage list in 1999. The chateau grounds thus became the main magnet which attracts thousands of visitors to Litomyšl each year.
Therefore, you should not pass up the opportunity to visit the Renaissance gem. Within the scope of the tour of the astle interiors you can visit the unique Baroque theatre, representational halls or exquisite private bedrooms. Art lovers will surely appreciate the exhibition of historical pianos and original Baroque theatre sets. You can visit the native home of Bedřich Smetana in the building of the former chateau brewery, which is found adjacent to the castle.
While strolling through the castle gardens you can admire the unique beauty of sgraffito ornamentation in the form of love letters, which cover the entire exterior façade of the castle. After touring the castle grounds, the nearby Monastery Gardens with an exhibition of sculptures by Olbram Zoubek provides a peaceful place for rest and relaxation.
